Slope Safety Education Program – Chek Nai Ping , Sha Tin

The lack of maintenance of slopes and retaining walls is the major contributing factor to many landslides in Hong Kong. Many landslides are triggered by water ingress into slopes and by soil erosion during heavy rain. To prepare landslides from happening, a slope and home safety education program co-organized with Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) was held on 18 March 2007 at Chek Nai Ping , Sha Tin. It aims to enhance the knowledge and awareness on slope safety of the villagers so that landslides could be prevented. Home safety knowledge was also promoted to villagers in the program thus a safe living environment could be built.

Apart from delivering a talk on slope safety and maintenance by the staff of CEDD on the program day, staff and volunteers of the Red Cross distributed slope and home safety leaflets and provided health check service to villagers. The community’s awareness to the prevention of landslides and slope maintenance was enhanced through different activities including the talk, video broadcasting, game booth and leaflets distribution.
