Situation Update
A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Hualien County, Taiwan at 11:50 pm on 6 February 2018. So far over one hundred aftershocks were recorded, including the strongest one of magnitude close to 4. According to the information provided by Central Operation Emergency Center of Taiwan, as of 7 February 2018 at 2 pm, 4 people were reported killed, 243 injured and 85 still missing. The earthquake has caused buildings to collapse, electricity of 113 households and water supply of 35,000 households suspended. The Hualien County Government has closed all schools today.

At this moment, the local authorities are repairing roads leading to affected areas, which were partly damaged or blocked. Continued aftershocks are expected in the coming days and may affect the rescue and relief operation on the ground.

Red Cross Action
Taiwan Red Cross has immediately deployed emergency response team to the affected areas in Hualien to assist with the rescue operation. Over 60 staff and volunteers of Taiwan Red Cross are involved in assessment or relief actions.230 quilts, 150 sleeping beds have been distributed in temporary shelters, and 10 larger tents have been set up for the displaced.
