International Service Leadership Programme - Recent Development

Since 2005, International Humanitarian Service Leadership Program (ISLP) has collaborated with numerous universities in Hong Kong and National Red Cross/ Red Crescent Societies in other regions to facilitate various student initiatives related to various humanitarian issues such as on refugees, landmine victims, village children, etc. Both participants and institutions have positive feedback on the international and local services of ISLP. ISLP concern and care projects, and the corresponding cooperative institutions, are as follow:

Hong Kong Baptist University Caring for the South Asians in Thailand
BU Sri Lanka Psychological Enhancement Scheme
Hong Kong Institute of Education Refugee Concern in Ethiopia
Hong Kong Community College (Poly U HKCC) Heyuan Voluntary Teaching and Community Service Project
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Vietnam Agent Orange Caring Project
The University of Hong Kong Step To Embrace People in Sri Lanka (STEPS)
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Embrace Africa
Others Yuan Liu Voluntary Teaching Project
Project Infinity
Sichuan Caring Project

Since 2008, ISLP has co-organized “Project Infinity Cambodia Trip” with the Hong Kong Institute of Education. It aims to let students understand the poverty problem being suffered by the Cambodian children. In 2009, the students formed “Refugee Concern” for further studying the refugee issues and advocating peers to provide care and support to refugees.

“Caring for the South Asian 2008” was co-organized with the Hong Kong Baptist University. Its objective is to enable the students to render their caring actions to the tsunami victims and to better understand the recovery of livelihood in Phuket. In 2011, Hong Kong Baptist University Psychological Competence Association formed a BU Sri Lanka Psychological Enhancement Scheme, and went to Sri Lanka to deliver love and care to orphans, elderly and tsunami victims.

ISLP and Hong Kong Community College of Polytechnic University launched the “Heyuan Voluntary Teaching and Community Service Project” in 2005. Thereafter, participating students have gone there regularly for voluntary teaching in schools. They are concerned about the living and studying environment of local village children, and also help developing local volunteering in cooperation with local university students.

In August 2011, ISLP has held the international forum “U+ Humanity International Forum”. In the 10-day forum, Hong Kong youths and delegates from mainland China, Kenya, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia explored global humanitarian issues and established a global youth network. Through the sharing among youth delegate and with guests experienced in humanitarian fields, participants have further enriched their understanding towards humanitarian work.
