Offering warmth and blessings to the homeless 

Dr Cheung Son Alicia is a dentist driven by her faith. Her guiding principles include the belief that giving is more blessed than receiving and the importance of loving one’s neighbour as oneself. These teachings have inspired her to serve others selflessly throughout the years.

Over the past decade, Dr Son has been selflessly providing free dental services to the underprivileged in various areas such as Hong Kong, Mainland China and remote villages abroad. Every year since 2008, she has been travelling to Laos to visit the mountainous regions, so people living there may have the chances to receive dental treatment. “Despite the challenging living conditions, the people there always have a positive attitude which has inspired me to appreciate the little things in life.” Dr Son feels grateful for the opportunities to serve and the inspiration she receives from serving others.  

Dr Son is dedicated to caring for the homeless in Hong Kong. She visits the North Point area regularly to connect with the homeless, ragpickers and other minority groups. Through these visits, she aims to gain a better understanding of their situations and needs while offering them care and food. “Every homeless person has their own story. Their experiences often move me deeply, motivating me to help them.” In 2011, Dr Son joined the Christian Concern For The Homeless Association as a volunteer. She provides regular monthly dental services at the Association’s clinic, helping the homeless, low-income families and ethnic minorities regain their ability to eat normally and self-confidence. 

Building trust is crucial when it comes to helping the homeless. However, it is often difficult for them to feel secure enough to seek help. It takes a lot of time and care to gain their trust and form a connection with them. “This requires a great deal of patience, empathy and persistence in service.” Despite the challenges, she finds joy in her volunteer services. “Every time we serve, there are moments of happiness which are far more valuable than any material reward.” Dr Son believes that no act of kindness is too small, and even the smallest gesture can help those in need.

“Humanity is about blessing others, alleviating their suffering, and respecting the value of the individual.”
