Wong Fuk-wing Memorial Fund
1. Background of the Fund
The "Hong Kong Red Cross Wong Fuk-wing Memorial Fund" (The Fund) is set up by family members of the late Mr. Wong Fuk-wing (Mr. Wong), the Hong Kong volunteer who sacrificed his life during the earthquake that struck Yushu, Qinghai in April 2010.
The Fund is to commemorate the voluntary and selfless service spirit of Mr. Wong, as well as his endeavors to improve the lives of vulnerable people in the Mainland. Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been entrusted by Mr. Wong's family members to receive and manage the donations received by the Fund, and to support and manage service projects which are in line with the Fund’s objectives through the Red Cross service network.
2. Objective of the Fund
Mr Wong Fuk-wing has demonstrated and set an example of voluntary humanitarian spirit. Donations received by the Fund will mainly support service projects based in the Mainland for the protection of human life, care for the health of the vulnerable and respect for human dignity.
In view of the background of the Fund, projects with the following nature will be considered with higher priority:
- Improvement of the conditions for orphans, children in sick and poverty;
- The provision of assistance and care for patients;
- The promotion and support for the bone marrow donation and related services;
- The provision of assistance for victims of natural disasters;
- Encouraging more people to engage in voluntary humanitarian acts;
- Other services with similar purposes as those set out above.
3. Control of the Fund
In order to ensure effective control and uphold accountability of service projects supported by the Fund, all projects must operate under the service networks and management mechanisms of the HKRC as well as the Red Cross Society of China. The HKRC will identify suitable Mainland projects which will fit the Fund's objectives, and manage such projects in accordance with the Fund's Terms of Reference and the organization's project management requirements. All projects will be vetted and monitored by the HKRC's Chairman's Committee.
