The Awardee of 2021 Hong Kong Humanity Youth Power - Mr Ho Wai-kit

Breaking boundaries and passing on humanitarian values

Mr Ho Wai-kit has had a lively personality with countless creative ideas since he was a child. He joined the Red Cross Youth Uniform Group in secondary school and was selected as an "Outstanding Red Cross Youth Member" in Secondary Five, which prompted him to think more about his corresponding "responsibility" and "role" as a youngster. After graduation, he registered as a social worker. He continued to participate in various frontline humanitarian services in his free time. With the service experience gained from Red Cross Youth Uniformed Group and various skills acquired from social worker training, he actively participated in youth development work.

In 2010, Mr Ho became the voluntary leader of East Kowloon Divisional Headquarters of Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC). He founded a youth group called "EKD Youth" to encourage young people to understand and experience the spirit of humanity with a mindset that breaking boundaries. “To truly connect with young people, we cannot put our ideas on them, but have to inspire them using innovative thinking to drive them to ponder the importance of humanity.” In the past decade, he and his team members with different backgrounds have implemented many innovative plans. He once led a group of young people to live a "48-hour" homeless life in a number of districts across Hong Kong. They experienced firsthand the living conditions of different social classes, which inspired them to think about the needs of the disadvantaged from multiple angles.

It has been 19 years since Mr Ho joined HKRC. He said that voluntary experience facilitated his personal growth to a large extent. It is also his motivation to relentlessly pass on the humanitarian spirit to the younger generation. “I'm not only a glimpse in the dark, but also someone going beyond to lay wires and connect people from different backgrounds. Together, we light up the world."

Humanity is to live in the moment, to act without hesitation, and to actively alleviate other's suffering.
