The Awardee of 2019 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Ms Rabi Yim Chor-pik

“Humanity is respecting the value of human beings, giving back to the society and changing the world with love.”

Breakthrough from physical obstacles to help others and yourself
When facing a sudden and drastic change in life, some would not be able to recover from the setback, but Ms Rabi Yim Chor-pik chose to handle it with positivity. Ms Yim became physically handicapped after a traffic incident in 1998 and had been using a wheelchair ever since. Right after the injury, it was difficult for her to even lift up her arms. Hitting rock bottom, the thought of giving up had crossed her mind, but she soon got rid of such thought and decided to start afresh by actively receiving physiotherapy to seize the prime time for recovery.

Ms Yim believes that with passion and hard work, everything can be improved, “people with disabilities face a lot of unfair situation in daily life and I have occasionally raised recommendations to relevant organizations in the past. However, individual’s effort is limited for effectively improving the predicament that people with physical disabilities are facing.” In 2005, Ms Yim joined an association dedicated to assist severely disabled person, and she has been promoting disability inclusion through various means, as well as proactively advocating barrier-free policies.

Fight for equality. Promotion of disability inclusion.
When Ms Yim first joined the association, she merely shared her own experience with youngsters and encouraged those with disability to stay strong in adversity. After joining the association for over a decade, Ms Yim now provides hands on assistance for the people with severe disabilities to solve problems in their daily lives. The key to person with disabilities re-joining society lies in whether they can get a fair opportunity of employment. As a visual designer, Ms Yim made use of her professional knowledge in design and proactively trained youngsters who are severely disabled and provided job referral, so they could make their own living with the skills under their belt. Ms Yim is dedicated to make the most out of her ability for continuous contribution to society, “I will try as long as I have set my mind on something. Although I am no longer physically agile, I could still create infinite possibilities.”
