The Awardee of 2016 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Mr Ng Yiu-fai

Building Platform for Developing Talents
Mr Ng Yiu-fai has been suffering from lower-limb spasm subsequent to a bone marrow biopsy in childhood for running high fever. Upon returning to Hong Kong from his overseas studies, he determined to work in the IT field. Though a dual bachelor’s degree holder, he found job-seeking an uphill battle due to common misunderstanding towards the disabled. "Through setting up an online job-matching platform specifically for the disable, I hope people with disability can make full use of their capabilities with dignity."
Walking Together on Job-seeking Path
Making use of his expertise, Mr Ng volunteered to develop a website displaying accessibility information for a charity in 2010. The website provides different information such as location of toilets or venue access for the disabled in public places.
Having experienced the frustrations in job hunting and being misunderstood, he founded the voluntary organization “You Will Succeed” in 2012 to provide an online job-matching platform for the disabled. Since 2013, it has successfully helped locate jobs for more than 200 disabled people. To help enhance disabled job-seekers’ competitiveness, not only did Mr Ng offer job interview workshops in person, but also skill training programmes.
“In job-seeking, taking the first step is the most difficult part for a disabled person. The help and support from others are crucial for the launch.” He would, therefore, accompany job-seekers for their interviews and encourage them to try out new things for enriching self-confidence. To find out whether employers understand the needs of the disabled, he had worked in a company on a trial basis. To the job-seekers, Mr Ng is an attentive listener who helps soothe their frustrations. He also helps them understand their pathway forward, and offers mental support.
Mr Ng has been actively participating in various volunteering work. In 2014, he helped in social media promotion for a charity campaign of The Outstanding Givers. He aspires to become a bridge for connecting all fronts, and will continue to partner with different organizations to help address the needs of the vulnerable.
