Professor Leung Ping-chung has practiced medicine for 40 years. He has repeatedly visited poverty-stricken regions, such as Indonesia, India, Ceylon, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Uganda, to provide medical services. When a university student he organised the ‘Hong Kong College Students Social Service Team' to help people living in squatter areas. In 1993 he set up Operation Concern, a voluntary medical rehabilitation team, which offers free surgery, training and rehabilitation support to residents of remote areas in mainland China. Operation Concern has treated more than 15,000 patients, conducted more than 2,300 surgical operations and trained over 300 medical and nursing staff over the past 15 years. Professor Leung is currently the Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also the Director of The Jockey Club

Centre for Osteoporosis Care & Control, Honorary Consultant of Hospital Authority, President of the International Research Society on Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIROT), Director of Institute of Chinese Medicine and Director of the Centre for Clinical Trials on Chinese Medicine. Professor Leung has also contributed to public hospitals for 42 years by serving as the Director of Surgery and Advisory Professor of Orthopedic Physicians.

As a Hong Kong Deputy to the National People's Congress, Professor Leung has focused on calling international attention to the wealth gap, vulnerable groups and social inequality in the National People's Congress.

Professor Leung won numerous awards in recognition of his work in medicine and his contributions to charitable causes, including Ethnic Unity and Progress of China's State Council, The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences of The University of Hong Kong and the Gusi Peace Prize of Philippines.
