The Awardee of 2017 Hong Kong Humanity Youth Power - Ms Michelle Siu Hoi-yan

Spreading love through music
Ms Michelle Siu Hoi-yan had her eyeballs removed in a cancer surgery when she was three months old. Despite her visual impairment, she is gifted with a singing voice capable of moving people around her, which lets her live in dignity.
Having learned vocal music and the piano since young, Michelle believes music is a universal language that enables one to communicate and share with others anywhere in the world, helping to spread positive messages to them.
In 2009, she sang in a charity fundraising event for her first time and inspired the disabled audience to be positive with her own life experiences. This episode made her realize that she could bring happiness to people around her. Since then, she has actively participated in various voluntary singing performances and visits to spread the message of love.
Life-on-life inspiration
In 2014, Michelle set off to the “AIDs Village” in Henan, mainland China, to visit and teach local orphans music and English. On this occasion, an elderly woman went in front of her and wept. That was because many people were afraid of the risks of AIDS infection that deterred them from visiting the village. Therefore, she was extremely touched when Michelle and a group of volunteers had the courage to be there. The experience has made a lasting impact on Michelle, who continues to look forward to bringing love and warmth to people in need.
Michelle has also participated in the global sight-restoring campaign organised by “Orbis Hong Kong”, which took her to Bangladesh in 2012 to visit local children suffering from cataract. She has also performed in several charity fundraising events, hoping to motivate others with her singing and enabling more visually impaired people in financial need to gain treatment opportunities for vision restoration.
After winning “The Top Ten Regeneration Warriors” title in 2015, Michelle has been invited to several secondary and primary schools for sharing, where she used her own experiences to encourage students to overcome their challenges and problems in a positive spirit and do her bit for life education.
