The Awardee of 2021 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Dr Tse Mei-yee
Overcoming pain and fulfilling wishes of parents who have had miscarriages
Dr Tse Mei-yee has long been specializing in counselling and education. In 2017, she saw news about a couple suffering emotional breakdown because they could not get back their foetus as they had miscarriages less than 24 weeks pregnancy. She experienced the same pain, and thus was determined to break through this predicament.
Hong Kong has always followed the old practice of treating foetus under 24 weeks pregnancy as "medical waste". Dr Tse believes that fetus is an offspring, no matter alive or dead; by which, she defined it as the "little baby". Therefore, she established "Little Baby Concern Group" to conduct research, lobbying, and advocacy work. She made thorough suggestions to the government for multiple times, including setting up facilities for burial and cremation of the little babies. That was not easy. “I'm grateful to receive support from my family and friends. We discuss and promote the campaign with support from more than 10,000 people in different sectors, including education, social welfare, religion and medical care, regardless of political or religious stance."
In the past few years, Dr Tse made use of her expertise and had never stopped her education and counselling work, helping many parents after miscarriages to fulfill their wishes. She is convinced that allowing their little babies to rest in peace is a basic respect for life and an effective way to help parents move on.
Dr Tse went all out to push for facilities for the little babies. Her persevering efforts were eventually recognized by the society and the government. "Garden of Forever Love", which symbolizes eternal love for young lives, was completed in 2019. The cremation facility for little babies will soon be completed too. There will be no more human foetus sent to landfills in Hong Kong. “I'm glad to see more and more completion of facilities for foetus. The process is filled with the love and humanitarian spirit of Hong Kong people. I'm truly moved.
Humanity is a belief which should be upheld to the end.
