The Awardee of 2021 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Mr Leung Kwok-shing
Knowledge changes destiny, sports spread hope
Mr Leung Kwok-shing suffered from asthma when he was small. He became a basketball team member with teachers' support and encouragement. Since then, he has been obsessed with the sport. After continuous practice, his physical condition gradually improved and he became a Hong Kong men's national basketball team member. "We should not underestimate the abilities of children. In some occasions, it just about opportunities. I help disadvantaged children regain their confidence and develop hope in life through playing basketball."
After graduation from university, Mr Leung became an athlete and a teacher. When he taught, he got in touch with a student who stayed at a children's home. Without family care, the student suffered serious emotional and behavioral problems, which hindered her chance to participate in extra curriculum activities. In view of this, Mr Leung invited her to join basketball team training. After some time, his behaviour and social skills improved. “Every child should enjoy fair opportunities to learn, play sports and unleash their potential. Their rights should not be deprived of due to their upbringing."
In 2012, Mr Leung founded a non-profit organization, "Hoops for Hope Basketball Asia". A group of like-minded physical education teachers and higher education students provides basketball education to underprivileged children and those living in children's homes in Tin Shui Wai every Sunday for free. They aim to help the participants to build positive values and attitude, unleash their potential, and give back to the society. "Hoops for Hope" has thrived under the joint efforts of the volunteers over the years. The service has now expanded to the Sham Shui Po and Kwun Tong districts. To date, it has provided free classes, visits, material matching and job referral services for about 40,000 beneficiaries.
"Knowledge changes destiny and sports spread hope." Mr Leung's biggest hope is that all children from disadvantaged families can find their own value, and see hope even in the dark.
Humanity is striving to help anybody and bringing them hope.
