The Awardee of 2020 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Sr Agnes Ho Kwai-ping, D. Min
"Humanitarian spirit is to spread love, care for and look after those in need."
"My mother left us when I was twelve. I have seven siblings so I decided to drop out of school to look after my younger brothers and sisters." Sr Agnes Ho Kwai-ping, was born to take care of the others. She looked after siblings in her childhood, and later established the Home Care for Girls to support homeless young girls. "I lost my mother in my childhood that made me understand the importance of family love to the growth of a child. I want to build a home for the homeless young girls. I want them to feel the warmth of a family instead of just providing them a temporary shelter."
With love and patience, Sr Ho has led the young girls in rebellious stage out of difficult situations. There was a girl who used to get into troubles and revile Sr Ho, "She was abused by her father, I wish I can walk with her through the difficult times, and help her to get back on her feet." Now, the girl is on the right track. Although she has already left the Home, she still keeps close contact with Sr Ho.
Accompany the Girls and Become Their Family
If a mother is the life and soul of a family, Sr Ho is the mother of the Home. Everyone in the Home Care for Girls celebrates festivals together, those who have left would also come back for the celebration. Sr Ho even accompanied a girl in her wedding.
With her simple sense of empathy, Sr Ho sees the girls at the Home as her family members. In 2011, the Home Care for Girls planned to relocate, but the neighborhood of the new site raised their concerns. Sr Ho therefore determined to choose another location. "I hope the girls can grow in love and respect, I don't want them to suffer from the unfriendliness of the others. Everybody deserves love from the others, it is the most precious gift which accompanies us to grow up."
