The Awardee of 2020 Hong Kong Humanity Award - Dr Jennifer Tong Wing-sze

"Humanitarian spirit is to light up hope and make the world a better place."

Leave the Ward to Serve the Forgotten

Dr Jennifer Tong Wing-sze joined Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a frontline field worker after obtaining specialist qualification, hoping to use her profession to bring hope to the forgotten people in various corners of the world. “Despite the limited resources we have in some regions, as a doctor, we should still do our best endeavours to treat every patient.”

Dr Tong often has to face different challenges in unstable and developing regions, “When we performed surgeries in Afghanistan, power outages can happen anytime as the power supply is unstable. The hospitals were frequently having low blood inventories. In these regions without sufficient resources, we have to be flexible to provide the best support for our patients. ”At one time, her family members strongly against her to work in the front line, but she managed to overcome all the difficulties with the mission of being a doctor and to bring hope to different corners of the world.

Mending Heart by Surgery

Dr Tong has worked with MSF in several war-torn areas over the past few years. It is common for people to neglect the value of life in war zones. "I once met a young mother in Iraq who suffered severe burns that left her unable to move her hands, and her greatest wish was to teach her children to write." She was seriously injured and did not get timely treatment. Dr Tong adjusted her bones so that her hands and fingers could regain minimal mobility. A year later, Dr Tong returned to Iraq. The young mother drew a picture for Dr Tong. The mobility of her hands could only recover partly, but hope has already been brought to her family. Dr Tong believes that if everyone takes one step, we can light up every corner of the world.
