Realization of the Dream of Helping Others

Dr Ko Chi-cheong had a dream when he was young. A dream of helping and serving the vulnerable people in the most under-privileged area of the world. After graduating from medical school, he became a surgeon in private practice. Although he was deviating further away from pursuing his childhood dream, his dream has always lived in his heart, not forgotten at all.

In 2004, Dr Ko acquainted with a young man who has been providing humanitarian services in areas of disasters in many occasions. His experiences reignited Dr Ko’s determination to help others. Starting from 2007, he ventured into those areas severely affected by wars, natural disaster and poverty as a volunteer medical doctor of Médecins Sans Frontières and delivered medical treatment to the local needy people. He has realized his childhood dream of helping others. In a span of 10 years, Dr Ko had completed 11 missions and had left his footprints in many countries such as Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Haiti, Iraq, Liberia, the Middle East, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Yemen, etc., providing emergency medical assistance to the local community and saving innumerable people whose lives are endangered.

On Standby Around the Clock for Saving Lives

In the regions affected by wars or armed conflicts, many people have been hurt by gun fires or military weapons. As such, the demands for surgical operations were extremely high. However, Dr Ko was often the only surgeon on site. Besides standing by to handle emergency cases every day, he also had to manage a wide range of surgeries and trainings for the local medical staff. Coupled with a generally harsh working environment in the war-devastated region and only basic medical instruments was available, Dr Ko had to be physically and psychologically prepared at all times.

Facing a burdensome amount of workload and pressure, Dr Ko has never had any thought of giving up. His courage and passion are originating from his pure love of helping the under-privileged. Even though he is not able to bring about peace for the people living in wardevastated areas, he strives to do whatever he can to save the lives of affected people and offer love and care for them. Dr Ko is planning to retire next year. For the next decade, he plans to spend six to nine months per year to participate in overseas voluntary humanitarian mission. He is hoping that he can set a good example of a medical person in the new era and deliver services to those needy people in another way, infusing more significance and meaning to his and other people’ s lives.
