A fire broke out at 284 Yu Chau Street in Shum Shui Po at around 5pm on 25 July 2016, causing 5 injured. A number of affected households were evacuated to the temporary shelter in the Nam Cheong District Community Centre.

Upon request by the Social Welfare Department at 9:30am on 26 July 2016, the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) mobilized 5 volunteers and staff from the Local Emergency Service Team to the shelter by noon. They distributed relief materials (including clothing bundles, thin sweaters, and daily necessities such as shampoo, bathing lotion, slippers) to 33 residents of 9 affected households.

HKRC also mobilized the Psychological Support Service Team to provide on-site psychological support to the affected people. 4 volunteers and staff provided psychological first-aid to 18 affected residents and distributed psycho-education leaflets to support their emotional needs.

The HKRC Local Disaster Relief Service
Since 1951, the Hong Kong Red Cross Local Disaster Relief Service has been providing clothing and daily necessities to the local population affected by natural disasters or other emergencies, as well as destitute individuals referred by government departments and other social service organizations. The Service is funded by the Social Welfare Department and The Community Chest of Hong Kong.

HKRC Psychological Support Service
Since 2004, the Hong Kong Red Cross has been dedicated to train up a pool of members from our society and formed a “Psychological Support Team” who can be mobilizes in emergency. So far, there are 280 trained psychological support service volunteers, including 9 volunteer psychologists in the team. We provide timely psychological support to Hong Kong communities affected by local and oversea disasters or emergencies. Since 2006, we have also started collaboration with the Hong Kong Airport Authority in provision of psychological first aid to the affected parties traumatized by aviation disasters.
