Flood and Landslide Preparedness Program in Ha Wo Che, Shatin

The lack of maintenance of slopes and retaining walls is the major contributory factor to landslides. Rain water penetrates into slopes and accelerates soil erosion during wet season.  In the past two years, serious flooding and landslides occurred in Ha Wo Che, Shatin after typhoon or heavy rain endanger the residents’ life and property.

To enhance the disaster preparedness knowledge and awareness of Ha Wo Che residents, Hong Kong Red Cross mobilized 36 volunteers to visit areas on 25 May 2014 where flooding and landslides may occur. Knowledge on prevention of landslides and flooding, as well as water-proof bag were delivered to the residents. In addition, disaster preparedness knowledge was also delivered to Ha Wo Che residents through talks, video on slope safety and game booths, etc. A total of 206 residents were benefited from the program
