Providing emergency assistance to the people affected by a building collapse in Ma Tau Wai
On 29 January 2010, a five-storey old building in Ma Tau Wai Road, Hung Hom collapsed. Four people died and two were injuried in the accident. The Home Affairs Department opened two community centres for more than 90 affected people as temporary shelters.
The Hong Kong Red Cross immediately mobilized 19 staff and volunteers, including members of Local Disaster Relief Team and Community Psychological Support Team, to distribute relief materials, including clothing bundles, sweaters and daily necessities. Psychological support was also provided to affected residents in the community halls.
To relieve the emotional needs of the affected people, the Hong Kong Red Cross mobilized 78 person-times of volunteers and staff who were trained in psychological first aid to provide psychological support service from 29 January to 1 February 2010. The actions included caring and accompanying the affected people, organizing the children for drawing and playing games, to mitigate their traumatic impacts due to the lost of home, family members’ injuries or death.
