International Day for Disaster Reduction Event 2018 - 2018.10


Launched by The United Nations, International Day for Disaster Reduction has been held on October 13 each year since 2009 to commemorate the efforts of people and communities around the world to reduce the risks posed by disasters, as well as raising awareness of disaster management.

 

In recent years, there were many destructive disasters in Hong Kong (such as serious traffic accidents and typhoons), thus it is necessary that citizen to get more knowledge on disaster preparedness so they can handle it calmly when it happens. The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) organized the International Day for Disaster Reduction Event on 13 October 2018 for the first time. Through diversified activities to enhance public knowledge and awareness on disaster preparedness.

 

Mr Sonny Au Chi-kwong, Under Secretary for Security, Dr Lau Chor-chiu, Deputy Chairman of the HKRC, and Mrs. Candy Yeung, Deputy Secretary General (Services) of the HKRC launch the city’s first one-stop disaster preparedness mobile application “RCDP”.

 

In addition, Orientation Challenge was held and Ms Stephanie Au, DP Ambassador and Olympic Swimmer, participated in the Orientation Challenge with other guests. The challenge carried out between Yau Mei Tei and Nan Chong where every team has to finish the challenge within a duration by completing various missions and testing their knowledge about the facilities about disaster prevention and rescue.

 

A carnival was also held at the HKRC headquarters, over 1000 general public participated in the Carnival. Through interesting game booths and visiting activities, the public can know more about the HKRC’s work on disaster preparedness and relief, and enhance their relevant knowledge and awareness on disaster preparedness.
