Humanitarian Caring Visit 2018 - 2018.07

According to the findings of a joint study on the impact of cold and hot weather on the health of senior citizens in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association in 2009, air temperature affect the health of senior citizens. During cold and hot weather, the number of hospitalised users increased.

Hence, extreme weather such as heat wave and cold spell affect the elderly significantly. Starting from this year, Hong Kong Red Cross decided to pay visit to the elderly before summer and winter times.

On 7 July 2018, HKRC collaborated with Christian Family Service Centre True Light Villa District Elderly Community Centre to pay visits to the elderly. 150 volunteers were mobilized to visit 150 elderly living in Kwun Tong Tsui Ping Estate. Knowledge of hot weather preparedness, fire prevention and evacuation were disseminated. Besides, heatstroke prevention items and survival kit (including torch, towel and whistle) were distributed to the needy to reduce the impact of extreme weather on them and achieve life-saving purposes.

The Elderly Visit in winter will be held on 1 December 2018. Cold resistant materials and survival kit will be distributed to the elderly, so that they can have enough cold resistant materials in winter and know how to prevent fire and the ways of evacuation.

The Program was supported by the "Golden Jubilee Charity Foundation".
