In 2017, Tai O became the hardest hit area for flooding during Typhoon Hato which wreaked havoc in the district. Most of the affected residents were elderly. In order to assess the ability of the elderly in facing flooding and their needs, a large-scale home visit in Tai O was paid in June 2018 with the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association Tai O Community Work Office. A total of 246 elderly were visited.
