Slope and Home Safety Education Program – Cheung Chau Island
The lack of maintenance of slopes and retaining walls, leading to water ingress into slopes and soil erosion during heavy rain, is a major contributing factor to many landslips in Hong Kong. To prepare landslides from happening, a slope and home safety public education program co-organized with Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) was held on 13 October 2007 at Cheung Chau Island where a number of private slopes located. It aims to enhance the knowledge and awareness on slope safety of the residents so that landslides could be prevented. Home safety knowledge was also promoted to residents in the program thus a safe living environment could be built for protecting human life.
The activity was held at the Cheung Chau Sports Centre. Apart from delivering a talk on slope safety and maintenance by the engineer of CEDD, staff and volunteers of the Red Cross also distributed slope and home safety leaflets, provided health check service and setup game booths for the residents. The community’s awareness to the prevention of landslips and home accidents were then enhanced through various activities.
