Typhoon Hato 2017: Work Report
Situation Update
On 23 August 2017, Typhoon Hato swept through southern China, bringing high winds and heavy rainfall to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. Authorities in Macau reported that the typhoon killed 10 people and injured 244. In Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, the typhoon caused 11 deaths. One person was reported missing and 741,000 people were affected in total. More than 6,600 houses collapsed, with an economic loss of over RMB 12 billion.
Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
In collaboration with the Macau Red Cross (MRC), the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has responded to the typhoon by deploying 6 staff and 15 volunteers to Macau since 26 August. The team took part in needs assessment, relief distribution and psychological support service. 500 house cleaning packs (including household bleach, liquid hand soap and cleaning gloves) were distributed in the flood-affected Rua da Praia do Manduco. A total of 76 flood-affected households and shop tenants in Rua da Praia do Manduco and Rua de Cinco de Outubro were visited with psychological support. All relief activities were completed by 1 September 2017.
The HKRC supported the distribution of 500 house cleaning packs, including household bleach, liquid hand soap and cleaning gloves to the needy in Rua da Praia do Manduco.
A clinical psychologist and a volunteer of Psychological Support Service of HKRC provided an individual psychological support session to an elderly who was almost drowned when the typhoon attacked Macau, to alleviate his initial distress and reduce the impact of trauma.
In addition, a HKRC relief officer was deployed to Jiangmen City (江門市) in Guangdong Province to carry out needs assessment along with the Guangdong Provincial Red Cross Emergency Response Team, and confirmed that external support to address emergency needs after the typhoon was not required.
Red Cross Actions
MRC provided relief assistance including first aid service, ambulances service, post-crisis counseling service, tracing service, distribution of water and other relief items in the communities affected by the typhoon. Red Cross volunteers were mobilized to assist in street cleaning, domestic cleaning and repair. As the relief phase in Macau has come to an end, MRC has also completed its relief operation.
The Guangdong Provincial Red Cross (GDRC) has mobilized 600 family kits to Zhuhai and Jiangmen, and deployed its emergency response team to conduct needs assessment and distribute relief items in Jiangmen. The emergency response team of Zhuhai Prefectural Red Cross, on the other hand, successfully rescued 2 people from a flooded underground car park.
