China Floods 2016: Work Report 4


Situation

Since late August, the coastal areas of China have been severely hit by a series of typhoons, bringing windstorm and heavy rain in Jilin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Hainan. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Typhoon Lionrock has affected 950,000 people in Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning. Another 5 provinces, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai, were hit by Typhoon Meranti and Malakas, with 2.76 million people affected and 29 people were killed. Over 7,300 houses collapsed and 61,000 houses were damaged. A total of RMB 15.48 billion direct economic loss was recorded.

In October, Typhoon Sarika and Haima hit southern China. As of 24 October, 5.55 million people in Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Fujian have been affected, over 1,600 houses collapsed, with a direct economic loss of RMB 4.45 billion.

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of 24 October, floods and typhoons have caused the following damages and loss:

Hong Kong Red Cross Action
The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) contacted the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) immediately after the Typhoon Sarika and Haima hit China, and has been following up closely on the needs for relief actions.

As of 24 October, the HKRC has distributed 6,345 family kits, 109,170 kg of rice, 31,710 kg of flour and 3,417 bottles of cooking oil in 10 provinces or autonomous regions in China, which were affected by floods, hailstorms or typhoons, benefiting over 44,000 person times.

To ensure compliance of guidelines for relief distribution, HKRC staff members visited all the beneficiary provinces, and collected feedback from beneficiaries on the quality of relief items and distribution process.

On 10 September, 2016, HKRC relief officer (2nd from the right) visited the typhoon affected areas in Longjing City of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province and conducted inspection on the documents of relief distribution..

On 24 Sept 2016, HKRC relief officer (left) visited the beneficiaries who received family kits donated by HKRC in Shuangqiao village, Shiyang Township, Taishun County, Wenzhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province.
