China Flood 2018: Work Report 1
Situation Update
Since the monsoon season started this year, continuous rainstorms, hailstorms, typhoons and other adverse weather has caused widespread floods in China. At least 10 provinces, including Sichuan, Gansu, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Zhejiang and Guangdong are affected by floods. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, more than 5 million people affected, 400,000 people were evacuated. 2,000 houses were damaged, with an economic loss of over RMB10 billion.
The recent floods has brought severe destruction in Sichuan and Gansu provinces that affected over 1.9 million people. In Chongqing, the heavy rainfall in mid-July has affected 132,000 people, 71,000 people have to evacuate and damaged over 10,000 houses.
Hong Kong Red Cross Action
The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been monitoring the situation since the beginning of the monsoon season and mobilized 500 prepositioned family kits to support the disaster-affected population. HKRC has also deployed 2 relief officers to monitor the distribution, assess the humanitarian impact of the disaster and if further relief assistance is needed in Chongqing.
To date, there are family kits, shelter tool kits and folding beds supported by HKRC and prepositioned in 7 provinces in China, including Hubei, Yunnan, Ningxia, Hainan, Chongqing, Jilin and Qinghai. HKRC will continue to monitor the situation closely and mobilize relief stocks in response to the needs of the affected population.
Red Cross Actions
In response to the situation in Sichuan and Gansu provinces, the International Red Cross has already mobilized approximately HKD 2.9 million from their Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF).
Since June, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has mobilized relief items, including family kits, blankets, folding bed and emergency fund to Guizhou, Sichuan, Gansu, Fujian and Chongqing, with a total value of more than RMB 10 million. Emergency response teams have been deployed to support relief items distribution in the affected provinces.
