China Floods 2017: Work Report 3
Since May 2017, continuous rainstorms, hailstorms and typhoons have caused severe floods and landslides in more than 10 provinces or prefectures in the Mainland, including Hunan, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Guangxi and Jilin. More than 14 million people were affected, over than 1.3 million people were evacuated. More than 20,000 houses collapsed, with an economic loss of over RMB20 billion.
The new round of floods has brought widespread destruction in Guangxi and Jilin in the last month. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 1.92 million peopled were affected by the floods in Guangxi, with over 180,000 people were evacuated, more than 6,300 houses collapsed. In Jilin, 1.75 million people were affected.
Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been monitoring the situation since the beginning of monsoon season and supported the distribution of daily necessities and rice to about 50,746 person-times in Chongqing, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi, Jilin and Yunnan.
Relief operations for the Mainland China Floods
As of early August, the HKRC has deployed 8 relief officers to support needs assessment and relief items distribution in Chongqing, Hunan and Guangxi. On-site support will be provided to the operations in Jilin and Yunnan later this month.
The HKRC relief officer introduced the relief items in the family kit to villagers in Yinjiang Village, Tongren Prefecture of Guizhou Province.
The HKRC relief officer visited Mrs Xiao, one of the beneficiaries in Santangwan Village, Taojiang County, Yiyang Prefecture of Hunan province and collected her feedback on relief item distribution.
The HKRC joined the needs assessment and relief items distribution in Hunan with the local Red Cross and evaluate the distribution process with the representatives from Santangwan Village.
HKRC relief officer visited the beneficiaries and checked the record for rice distribution in Pingyan Village, Linxi Township, Sanjiang County, Liuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Province.
Red Cross Society of China Actions
Since 20 June, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has mobilized relief items, including family kits, quilts, blankets, clothes and emergency fund to Jiangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei and Guangxi, with a total value of RMB 10 million. Emergency response teams have been deployed to support needs assessment and relief items distribution in the affected provinces.
In response to the new round of floods, the RCSC has distributed 100 tents and 2,000 quilts in Liaoning.
