China Floods 2017: Work Report 1
Since May 2017, 19 provinces in the Mainland have been affected by continuous rainstorms and hailstorms. On 21 June, the heaviest rainfall in the year has caused severe floods and landslides, affecting millions of people in 9 provinces, of which, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Hunan and Zhejiang provinces were particularly hard hit.
On 24 June, a massive landslide swept over Xinmo village of Sichuan province. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of 28 June, 10 people died, 73 were reported missing. Over 400 people were evacuated.

Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been monitoring the situation since the beginning of the monsoon season, and supported the distribution of daily necessities and rice to over 15,000 people in Chongqing and Guizhou.
The HKRC has currently prepositioned family kits, shelter tool kits and folding beds in 8 provinces, namely Hubei, Yunnan, Anhui, Ningxia, Hainan, Chongqing, Jilin and Qinghai. We will keep monitoring the situation and develop our plan of action for the coming months.
Red Cross Society of China Actions
In response to the recent floods, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) mobilized relief items, including tents, family kits, quilts, blankets, clothes and emergency fund to Sichuan, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Hunan and Zhejiang, with a total value of RMB 3 million. Emergency Response Teams were deployed to the affected areas to support the relief operations, including evacuation, search and rescue, setting up of temporary shelters, etc..
Two HKRC relief officers were deployed to Chongqing to support the needs assessment and relief items distribution.
The HKRC relief officers helped to verify beneficiaries’ identity during relief items distribution.
Our colleague demonstrated the use of hand winding torch in the family kit to villagers.
The Red Cross sent family kits, tents and quilts to Xinmo village, Sichuan immediately after the landslide and set up temporary shelters in the affected communities.
